Willow Road Pedestrian and Bicycle Improvements

This project is designing and implementing pedestrian and bicycle improvements on Willow Road between Bayfront Expressway and U.S. Highway 101, including a new pedestrian crossing at O'Brien Street and Class IV separated bikeways on both sides of the street.

Current status

This project was identified as a Tier 1 priority in the City’s Transportation Master Plan. City staff are currently conducting outreach on this project and pursuing a grant from the State Active Transportation Program to help fund this project.

With support from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission’s Dumbarton Forward Initiative, the City has developed an initial concept design and renderings for the proposed improvements. 

Community members are encouraged to provide feedback on their use of the Willow Road corridor and sign up for future updates by filling out a short online survey.

Related projects

Willow Road between Bayfront Expressway and U.S. 101 is State Route 114. Caltrans will be conducting maintenance on Willow Road in late 2022 or early 2023. City staff are working with Caltrans to add pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure where feasible, including new curb ramps, high visibility crosswalks and others.

Caltrans will also be upgrading the pedestrian push buttons and crosswalks along surface state highways (Willow Road, Bayfront Expressway, Marsh Road at the U.S. 101 interchange, and El Camino Real) in the next two years. This work would also include upgrades at locations on state roads across San Mateo County.
